For nearly two decades, the Boston Harbor Hotel has been offering free concerts, movies, and more as part of its Summer in the City entertainment series. Tonight’s event features a performance by Soul Sound Revue, a nine-piece band that performs Motown classics and will offer hits by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others.
Running from June through early September, Summer in the City provides entertainment Tuesday through Friday nights. Performances are on the hotel’s floating entertainment barge so guests can enjoy the music and a commanding view of Boston Harbor. To add to the evening’s al fresco fun, those attending can purchase cocktails, appetizers, or a meal from the hotel’s Rowes Wharf Sea Grille.
Different musical genres are featured three nights of the week: Pop-Soul Tuesdays include a mix of classic R & B, Motown, and soul; Rat Pack Wednesdays pay homage to the original Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr.; Blues Barge Thursdays showcase performances by local and national blues musicians. At the Friday night Movies by Moonlight, the hotel screens classic family-friendly movies like Dirty Dancing, Jaws, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
The concerts run from 6 to 10 p.m., and the movies begin at dusk. A full calendar of events can be found here.
Soul Sound Revue comprises three vocalists whose dynamic harmonies are backed by powerful rhythm and horn sections. Guests can expect to hear classics like Ben E. King’s 1961 hit “Stand by Me”; a selection of Stevie Wonder songs, including “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” and “Superstition”; and ’80s classics like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” by pop icon Michael Jackson.
Tomorrow, Summer in the City hosts Frank Sinatra impersonator Patrick Tobin, and Berklee College of Music alum and country singer-songwriter Greg Burroughs performs on Thursday. This Friday’s Movie by Moonlight is Back to the Future, the 1985 time travel classic starring Michael J. Fox.
The Boston Harbor Hotel’s Summer in the City series runs through September 9. Tonight the Soul Sound Review plays from 6 to 10 p.m., free and open to the public. Food and drinks can be purchased at the Rowes Wharf Sea Grille. For more information about the series, check the schedule. Find directions here.
