Tony-winning rock ’n’ roll musical takes Boston by storm

Theater fans rejoice: the national touring company of the Tony Award–winning glam-rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch has taken up residence at the Shubert Theater, where it’s receiving enthusiastic reviews. Tickets are still available, but hurry, the show closes Sunday, June 11.
Hedwig, the eponymous title character, is the transgender lead singer of an East German rock band and the victim of a botched sex-change surgery. She is on a journey in search of love and identity.
The play—with book by John Cameron Mitchell, who starred as the original Hedwig, and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask—debuted off Broadway in 1998, winning an Obie Award and Outer Critics Circle Award, before transferring to the screen in 2001, with Mitchell reprising his performance. The show arrived on Broadway in 2014, where it won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Lead Actor in a Musical for star Neil Patrick Harris.
The lead character was inspired by a former babysitter of Mitchell’s and the music and lyrics are influenced largely by the androgynous glam-rock style made popular by David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop.
The Boston production stars Tony-nominee Euan Morton (Taboo, Sondheim on Sondheim) in the title role and Hannah Corneau (Daddy Long Legs) as Yitzhak, Hedwig’s backup vocalist and long-suffering husband. The play is directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), who earned another Tony nomination for directing the Broadway production of Hedwig.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is at the Shubert Theater, 265 Beacon St., Boston, through June 11. Ticket, range from $35 to $150 and can be purchased here or by calling the Shubert Theater box office at 866-348-9738. The show runs one hour and 35 minutes and is performed without an intermission. Take a MBTA Green Line train to Boylston Street or the Orange Line to the Tufts Medical Center stop.
