Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl: Guilt-Free Ice Cream
Annual three-day event raises money to fight cancer
Are you an ice cream lover? Then grab a spoon and head down to City Hall Plaza today through Thursday for the 35th annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl. Billed as “the nation’s largest all-you-can-eat ice cream festival,” the fundraiser supports the Jimmy Fund, which provides adult and pediatric cancer care at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
When the festival first launched in 1983, four local ice cream companies served about 1,000 people. This year, more than 40,000 ice cream lovers from all over the country are expected. Discounted tickets can be preordered online or purchased on site the day you attend. The Scooper Bowl has raised more than $5 million for cancer research and patient care since it began.
This year, 11 ice cream companies—Artic Zero, Baskin-Robbins, Ben & Jerry’s, Breyer’s, Edy’s, Friendly’s, Hood, Minus the Moo, Vice Cream, Yasso, and Yuengling’s Ice Cream—will be dishing out 51 flavors, from brownie blast and butter pecan to cookie dough and root beer float.
Several live bands, including local groups Dan and the Wild Fire and GNO, will be performing. Among other acts are hip-hop DJ Pup Dawg, who has worked with J. Cole, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and Sean Paul, and the punk-rock band Jump Start, from Weymouth, Mass.
So leave the guilt at home and get ready to indulge. You’ll be supporting a wonderful cause.
The Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl is being held at Boston’s City Hall Plaza today, Tuesday, June 6, through Thursday, June 8, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets ($10 for adults and children 10 and older and $5 for children 3 to 9) can be purchased in advance online here or on site ($15 for adults, $10 for children).
