Following his debut in last year’s smash hit Captain America: Civil War, 21-year-old British actor Tom Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker, the famed high school student turned web-slinger protecting New York City, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film marks Holland’s first starring turn as Spider-Man and word on the street is that it is going to be a commercial and critical hit, with opening weekend domestic gross expected to reach $100 million and as much as $1 billion worldwide.
Spider-Man: Homecoming takes up several months after Captain America: Civil War left off. Peter Parker is struggling to balance life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with battling crime as his alter ego, Spider-Man. And there’s a lot of crime for him to combat as he faces a new nemesis, the Vulture, played by Oscar-nominee Michael Keaton. The cast includes a number of Hollywood favorites, among them Robert Downey, Jr., as Peter’s mentor, Tony Stark, Hannibal Buress as Coach Wilson, and Laura Harrier as Liz, Peter’s classmate and love interest.
Critics are already touting the film as a hit. According to USA Today, “Holland not only looks the part of a 15-year-old but portrays the needed vulnerability, immaturity, and jocularity of his comic-book counterpart that was sorely missed in previous movie incarnations.”
