A rectangular pink pig on Comm Ave—who’d-a thunk it? But pinhole cameras don’t have to be boring, as Ying Yao (CAS’18) demonstrates with this one she made for an introductory film photography class. Photo by Maddie Malhotra (COM’19)

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.”―Anna Quindlen. Annie Mooers (COM’19) (left) and Maria Elisa Vallejo (CAS’19), here outside Downtown Crossing’s historic Brattle Bookshop, probably couldn’t have said it better. Photo by Maddie Malhotra (COM’19)
Who knew that cleaning the floors could produce such a striking work of art? Unfortunately, the patterns created by night custodian Rene Perez at Marciano Commons are transient. Photo by Jackie Ricciardi

Ah, summer—those days of soda and pretzels and beer. But not for everyone. After all, when else could the New Balance Field turf be repaired? Photo by Jackie Ricciardi
Summer is indeed quieter on the Charles River Campus, but there is still plenty on offer: Alison Staffin (CAS’17) at work June 20 in CFA’s Drawing and the Figure class. Photo by Cydney Scott

BU Stage Troupe’s summer show, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, with Conner Reed (COM’18) (from left), Alexandra Edwards (COM’17), and Lucy Gamades (COM’18, CAS’18), is free; the last show is scheduled for August 30 at the Student Theater at Agganis Arena. Photo by Maddie Malhotra (COM’19)

“Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars.” Most of us cannot (yet) do that, so the Coit Observatory’s free Wednesday public open night may be the next best thing. SPH research analyst Elizabeth Henehan took advantage June 28. Photo by Maddie Malhotra (COM’19)
The BU Bridge is as integral a part of the University as Marsh Chapel, the Castle, or Marsh Plaza's Free at Last sculpture honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon.’59). And the views from this icon are stunning in any season. Photo by Cydney Scott

Reaching new heights, or at least repairing them: for some the living may be easy in the summertime, but for others, it’s a time to get to needed chores, like fixing a CAS classroom ceiling, before the semester begins. Photo by Jackie Ricciardi
The Inglorious Batters, SPH’s hapless but lovable club softball team, was the brainchild of Ola Omotowa (SPH’18). They lost their first game, 12-0. They lost the next game, and the next. In fact, they lost all six games—but they had fun. Photo by Jackie Ricciardi

As part of the BU Climate Action Plan, a long-term project led by Pamela Templer and Lucy Hutyra, both CAS profs, and aided by students like Marisa Lee (CAS’19), is measuring carbon storage capacity and carbon dioxide fluxes on the BU campus. Photo by Cydney Scott

Most students—and many faculty—leave campus right after final exams or Commencement in May. But the summer months are a hub of activity at BU, filled with construction projects, summer labs and courses, special programs for elementary school, high school, and college students, freshman orientation sessions, and much more. We’ve put together a slideshow of photos culled from BU Today’s summer “Close-Ups” so you can have a vicarious taste of a BU summer.
