  1. I believe our class – 1955 – was supposed to have been the first to graduate outdoors at Nickerson, but it rained! CLA (now CAS) regrouped in an area of the old Garden occupied the previous week by the elephants from the circus. A redolent memory! We were, however, a distinguished lot since ML King was a fellow graduate, from the School of Theology, and an honorary recipient was the junior Senator from Massachusetts, John Kennedy. 1955’s claims to fame!

  2. In 1974 SED graduated about 5,000 students. First, we went to the overall commencement at Nickerson Field and then got our diplomas in the hockey arena. I remember graduating with Senator Ed Brooke’s daughter and I believe Howard Stern was in the class but from the School of Communication.

I was the first graduate from college in my family, a proud moment for my parents. My dad had gone three years at Harvard but couldn’t come up with the financing for his senior year.

After the ceremony we ate at Anthony’s Pier 4 to celebrate. I didn’t have a job yet but Idid manage over 40 years in education as a teacher, coach, and middle/high school principal. In 2014the state principals’ association honored me as their Bertram Holland Principal of the Year.

That symbolic ceremony 44 years ago was my ticket to a career of service where I never regretted a single day in the profession. BU, I owe you a debt of gratitude!
