With summer in full swing, there may not be a better way to spend a night out with friends or family than munching on Cracker Jack while watching an exciting baseball game featuring up-and-coming Boston Red Sox minor league players. Head over to Pawtucket, R.I., tonight to see the Pawtucket Red Sox host game two of a three-game series against the Columbus Clippers.
The game begins at 7:05 pm, and gates open an hour before. You can’t beat the price: general admission tickets are just $9, $6 for children, seniors, or military. With a general admission ticket, fans can take any available blue seat, head for the outfield bleachers, or lounge on the berm near the PawSox bullpen in left field.
Or, if you want a closer view of the action, you can pay $14 for field box seats. And the PawSox and National Grid are offering first responders a complimentary general admission ticket to every Wednesday home game this season. Police and fire personnel and EMTs just need to present their ID at the box office to receive a complimentary ticket.
The PawSox are a Triple-A affiliate of the Red Sox. Founded in 1970, the team features both Red Sox minor-league system veterans and exciting prospects. There was talk of moving the team south to Providence in 2015, and more recently to Worcester, but for now, the team remains in 10,031-seat McCoy Stadium, which was erected in 1942 and named for Thomas P. McCoy, Pawtucket mayor from 1936 to 1945. The stadium underwent a major facelift in 1999.
McCoy Stadium is notable for hosting the longest game in baseball history—a 33-inning, two-day battle between the PawSox and the Rochester Red Wings that began the night of April 18, 1981. After more than eight hours of play, the game was halted at 4:09 am April 19 by the International League president. The game was finished June 23 and took just 18 minutes to end with a 3-2 win for Pawtucket.
Gamegoers are not permitted to bring in food or drink, but the park’s food court and concession stands offer a wide selection of food, beer, and wine. Check out the mural around the park depicting past Red Sox and PawSox. Purchase souvenirs at the team’s official store, which is open on game days from 9 am until game’s end. Autograph seekers can head to the PawSox dugout up to a half hour before game time or gather outside the players’ entrance at the bottom of home plate after the game for a shot at nabbing a prized signature.
The PawSox play at McCoy Stadium, One Columbus Ave., Pawtucket, R.I. The game tonight, Wednesday, July 25, starts at 7:05 pm. General admission is $9 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and children ages 12 and under. Take the Providence/Stoughton commuter rail line from South Station to Providence, the R-line to the Pawtucket Transit Center, the #80 bus to the Columbus FS Pond stop, and walk. Find driving directions here. Parking is free, first-come, first served.
