After a two-year hiatus, this weekend moviegoers can once again be transported to J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World with the arrival of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. A sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), it’s the second of what’s expected to be a five-film Fantastic Beast franchise, a prequel to the Harry Potter series.
The new film picks up where the first left off: the evil and powerful wizard Gellert Grindelwald (again played by Johnny Depp) has been captured by the Magical Congress of the United States of America and is in jail in New York. As the movie opens, he escapes while being transported from one prison to another, unleashing all manner of dark chaos. Back in London, his rival, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), teams up with the first movie’s protagonist, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), to capture Grindelwald and halt his evil plans.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a big hit when it opened two years ago, grossing $219.9 million worldwide the first weekend and more than $814 million at the global box office. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Costume Design. Like the first film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald arrives with much fanfare. It’s predicted to rake in between $65 million and $75 million this weekend in this county, and movie website Fandango says it’s “the most anticipated fall movie.” In addition to Depp, Law, and Redmayne, its impressive cast has returning actors Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, and Dan Fogler (CFA’98) as Jacob Kowalski.
