After 25 years, The Lion King is being retold on the big screen with a star-studded cast and photorealistic animation. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) remake follows Simba (Donald Glover) on his coming-of-age journey after his father, Mufasa, is killed by his evil uncle, Scar. Nala (R&B superstar Beyoncé), Simba’s childhood friend, searches for Simba several years after he’s left their pride to urge him to return.
The duo is joined by Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as his sidekick Timon. To correct the 1994 version’s mischaracterization of prides (which are matrilineal groupings), the remake provides more of a backstory for Nala’s motivation to seek help after Scar’s takeover, showing her emergence as a leader.
This time around, viewers can expect to see their favorite characters appear as lifelike as animals in a nature documentary, but with human reactions incorporated in their interactions. According to director Jon Favreau, the actors were filmed during their scenes together so that their animated characters could emulate their on-screen chemistry. The cast also performed using virtual reality technology so they could feel as if they had stepped into Simba’s kingdom in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Lion King is the third and final Disney remake of the summer, after Dumbo and Aladdin. However, the film is expected to more than double its predecessors’ take at the box office, with a projected $50 million to $60 million opening weekend.
