38 Tuesdays, 38 Terriers, 38 Inspiring Pieces of Advice
Highlights from a year of #TerrierTuesdays
Every Tuesday, like clockwork, our #TerrierTuesdays series hits your Instagram feed with a Terrier who’s making waves on campus. The feature showcases their journey to BU, where they are today, and their plans after graduation. Our goal in sharing their stories? To inspire others to follow their own interests and utilize all the resources at Boston University to turn their passions into a successful future. While no two stories are alike, each post ends with the same question: “What advice do you have for your fellow Terriers?” In 2019, our featured students didn’t hold back. Read up and be inspired.

1. Cindy Lam (SHA’20)
“Enjoy college life as much as you can! Meet new people, learn new skills, and try new things. At the end you only regret the chances you didn’t take.”

2. Connor Malbeuf (COM’19)
”Manifest the life you want—the power of visualization for your dreams is so important for self-growth and inspiration in your life. Take risks you would never usually take, say yes to something crazy, meet new people, and eat lots of cheese. Cheese helps everything.”

3. Aaron Hwang (ENG’21)
“Go make something! It’s extremely empowering to go out and learn how to make yourself something tangible with complete vertical integration. Understanding the entire process is extremely valuable to better specialize in anything.”

4. Katie Hansen (CGS’18, COM’20)
“Get your money’s worth! Try new things, put yourself out there, and do everything you can so you can look back and say, ‘Hey, I tried it’ instead of ‘Shoot, wish I would’ve done this.’ Oh, and check in with your parents every once in a while, they’ll appreciate it.”

5. Tim North (COM’22)
“I know college is hard and I know how difficult it can be to find your people, but they are out there. Keep putting yourself out there and try to form new relationships. Put effort into your relationships and they’ll grow.”

6. Thomas Rigal (CAS’21, Questrom’21)
“If I had any word of advice it would be to put yourself out there as often as possible. Join clubs you really have no business in, and meet as many people as possible. Also, call your mom.”

7. Kelci Lowery (COM’20)
“Networking can be scary, but there’s nothing more helpful than making friends in classes and in your future industry. Always ask questions.”

8. Sucharita Subramanian (Questrom’20)
“Value and cherish the relationships you create. The people you meet and the memories you create are just as meaningful and important as your academic experience. Talk to your professors, your classmates, your friends and learn something from them.”

9. Sam West (CFA’19)
“Call your parents, be good to your friends, and get enough sleep!”

10. Boston Perry (CAS’22)
“My best advice would be to work hard and stay happy! You may have to work hard to achieve your goals, but always make sure you stay happy in the process!”

11. Lauren Baik (CFA’19)
“College is short. Go out and explore Boston!”

12. Lul Mohamud (CAS’19)
“Turn around and look back and feel the love and excitement radiating from the people who worked so hard to help you get where you are today.”

13. Gabriella Romano (CGS’20, CAS’22 )
“Always keep an open mind!”

14. Ruixin Zhu (COM’19)
“Step out from your comfort zone and embrace the larger world!”

15. Sam Weinberger (CFA’21)
“The greatest thing in life is doing what others say cannot be done.”

16. Tiffany Xue (ENG’19)
“It’s okay to have lazy days, where you barely leave your bed and only eat junk food and watch social media videos. I think they’re vital for staying sane while trying to get ahead in life.”

17. Amelia Dangerfield (GRS’21, Pardee’21)
“Take advantage of time with your professors! Even if you don’t have anything specific to ask them about, go to office hours anyway. Your professors are an incredible resource for both navigating life at BU and figuring out what you want to do after graduation, and they are always eager to get to know their students. Don’t tell them I told you this, but they can also be pretty fun to talk to.”

18. Kelsie Garretson (CAS’21)
“Don’t give up. I know how cliché that is, but I almost did multiple times my freshman year. Get involved on campus and it will make a huge school feel like home very quickly. BU is very challenging academically, but the knowledge you gain is so worth it. The professors are AMAZING—talk to them, get to know them, and most importantly, be yourself.”

19. Simeon Webb (COM’21)
“Show love to people! You don’t need to know them! You don’t have to ask for permission to show someone some love. Make sure you tell the people close to you that you love them!”

20. Stephanie Tavares (CAS’21)
“Fail, be flexible, and step out of your comfort zone! Life isn’t linear. Everything you thought you knew about yourself, your future, your world could change tomorrow because there are twists, turns, hills, and mountains. If there’s any steady path to follow, it’s the one where you’re constantly learning and growing.”

21. Della Qin (COM’20)
“Take out your phone/camera/pen—whatever you have next to you—and start capturing your daily life, whether it be vlogging yourself or writing in a journal. You will find the extraordinary in the most ordinary things.”

22. Yuele Li (COM’20)
“College is only one step away from this scary adult life. You should really use this experience to make mistakes, be crazy, and do ridiculous things.”

23. Alberto DeJesus (CAS’21)
“Get out of your comfort zone. Do things that you have never even considered doing. I never thought I would get into sales or business. When I first started it, I hated and dreaded it. Now it’s something I love doing.”

24. Alex Neumann (CAS’21)
“Take classes outside your comfort zone. You never know what will spark your interest! Maybe an interest in archaeology, finance, or human physiology will be hiding below the surface just waiting to be discovered.”

25. Cameron “Mac” Wylie (COM’20)
“Take time to delve into your passions that may lie beyond what you want your major to be. If I never joined BU On Broadway, I never would have realized just how much I want to be involved with theater and eventually produce a Broadway musical. Nurture your passions and let it take your career somewhere more interesting.”

26. Natalie Bennett (CAS’20)
“It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of college responsibilities—don’t forget to have fun and be kind to yourself!”

27. Thomas Nitti (COM’20)
“While your teachers are a great resource, don’t forget to look at the people around you. You’re surrounded by incredibly talented and driven individuals, each of whom has something valuable to give or teach. When we all help one another, everyone does better!”

28. Stephanie Gonzalez (Sargent’21)
“Don’t close yourself off intellectually. Listen to others when they talk about what makes them tick, try to understand their logic, and always try to learn from it. Hang out with people you wouldn’t usually hang out with, listen to a genre you don’t usually listen to, eat things you wouldn’t usually eat! Try new things!”

29. Joshua Isak (CAS’22)
“There is always room in each one of us to grow and expand our horizons. Never stop trying new things and meeting new people. Also, remember that BU will never ever ask you for your password outside of signing in! Stay safe online and watch your digital hygiene, it can be a dangerous place out there!”

30. Leah Dworsky (Questrom’21)
“As a BU student upperclassman, I’ve learned that the most important aspect of college is using this time to pursue your interests. This is the time of our lives where we have the most time to do so. Might as well do what you enjoy now and see where that path takes you.”

31. Neha Saboo (Questrom’20)
“In the last three years, I’ve realized the hard way that life doesn’t stop during the days you’re not at your best. It’s so easy to continuously beat yourself up over it and feel guilty. But sometimes, it’s more important to give yourself a break; rest and recharge. Don’t forget to be kind to yourself on the days when you need it most.”

32. Casey Lewry (CAS’19)
“The professors at BU are incredibly supportive and really want to hear your ideas. I highly recommend making an effort to get to know them. My tip is to go to office hours the first week of class just to introduce yourself and explain why you’re interested in the class. You’ll get way more out of your college experience this way. (And trust me, they actually want you to come to office hours!) Also, I highly recommend taking interesting classes outside of your comfort zone.”

33. Lilian Li (COM’21)
“I have a hard time getting out of my comfort zone, so I ask myself this question: If I say no to this opportunity, will I regret it? If I feel regret—whether it’s going over to introduce myself to someone or going to an event on campus—I’ll push myself to do it. But don’t pressure yourself to be a perfectionist. You can be strong and love yourself as well. If I had let my perfectionist tendencies get in the way of my comfort zone, I wouldn’t be publishing a book!”

34. Tyler Handin (Questrom’22)
“Change only starts with us! Don’t let the little things get in the way of the bigger picture, and always remember to enjoy the present!”

35. Sabrina Weiss (COM’21)
“Be kind to your family, professors, friends, and yourself. Try to be comfortable with the uncomfortable elements of college! You have to put yourself out there in your classes and activities in order to make genuine connections and learn what you are passionate about. College is just the start of your life, so why not take on every opportunity you can.”

36. Jana Aguilar (CAS’22)
“Do not limit yourself by what you think you can or cannot do; do it anyway.”

37. Liam Quidore (CAS’21)
“Always strive to put as much positive energy you can into the universe. Being at BU can be challenging, and there are a lot of moments where you can easily become discouraged. So try not to let the small losses deter you from accomplishing your big victories. I promise, all the good energy you put out will come back to you, even if it takes some time.”

38. Rachel Callahan (COM’20)
“I accidentally stumbled upon this quote a while back, and it’s shaped my life: ‘Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.’ I usually hate the cheesiness of quotes, but this one is golden. Only recently did I find out that it’s from Howard Thurman. Fingers crossed he was right!”
