The Weekender: August 27 to 30
It’s the last weekend of what seemed like an endless summer. Before classes start on Tuesday, support Black-owned businesses at an outdoor market in the Seaport (or order merchandise from those businesses online), load up on fresh food at a farmers market, watch the Celtics in the NBA playoffs, or check out two virtual BU Weeks of Welcome events.
What to Eat
If you’re looking to welcome back the school year with a nice meal near campus, look no further than Audubon at 838 Beacon Street in South Campus. The small plates, vegetarian options, and high-end bar food mean everyone can find something they like. The restaurant has a patio for outdoor seating, too. Reservations are required—book by calling 617-421-1910 or emailing 838reservations@gmail.com.
Where to Shop
Brookline Farmers’ Market
Check out the Brookline Farmers’ Market in the parking lot behind the Coolidge Corner Theatre. You’ll find items like flowers, fish, kombucha, baked goods, cheese, meat, pasta, fruit, and veggies. Keep in mind that you must wear a mask while at the market, and you are not allowed to touch anything until you buy it. The market, which has been running for 39 years, is open on Thursdays from 1:30 to 6:30 pm.
Black Owned Bos. Market
The Seaport District is hosting the Black Owned Bos. Market on Sunday, August 30. Local Black-owned businesses will be selling their goods at 85 Northern Avenue—near the Institute of Contemporary Art—from noon to 6 pm. No more than 50 people will be allowed in the market area at one time, so interested guests must register in advance, free on Eventbrite. Note: credit or debit cards are strongly preferred.
If you would rather not travel to the Seaport, check out this directory of Black-owned New England businesses to see which ones ship their products, and do some shopping that way.
What to Play
Weeks of Welcome Events
Student Activities annual Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is a monthlong slate of programs and events just for BU students. On Friday, the BU Gaming Club, famous for re-creating BU’s campus on Minecraft during lockdown, hosts a Gaming Night for both new and experienced gamers. Attendees will be able to initially meet through Zoom to pair up. Games to play could include League of Legends, Minecraft, Lobbies for Fall Guys, and Among Us. Prizes, like a Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite and a Razer keyboard, will be given out.
On Sunday, play virtual Welcome Back Bingo. Grab some friends (in a safe manner) and have some fun before classes start.
Book tickets for both of these events on Eventbrite.
What to Watch
Fresh off of sweeping division rival Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Boston Celtics face defending NBA champion Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Bond with your roommate and watch the hometown team, led by Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kemba Walker, play against Raptors Pascal Siakam, Kyle Lowry, and Fred VanVleet. The teams are scheduled to play three games before classes start, on Thursday, August 27, Saturday, August 29, and Monday, August 31. Thursday’s game tips off at 6:30 pm, while the start times for the other two are to be determined.
To watch, tune into ESPN or NBC Sports Boston, or stream here.
