LfA-ing from Taiwan
Last September, as many BU students returned to residential life on campus, senior Christina Yang was one of hundreds of University students embarking on a very different path. Taking advantage of BU’s Learn from Anywhere (LfA) hybrid teaching and learning format, she elected to study 7,800 miles from Boston. The 12-hour time difference between Boston and her home in Taipei, Taiwan, means rising at 3 am, grabbing naps when and where she can, and keeping in touch with friends and classmates via Zoom.
Despite missing out on the full campus experience for her senior year, Yang (COM’21) says that LfA has provided some perks as well. Taiwan has been mostly spared from the COVID-19 virus (there have been only 10 deaths and fewer than 1,000 cases among its 24 million citizens), which means she can move throughout Taipei relatively freely, meeting high school friends for meals and studying at cozy cafés around the city without most of the anxiety and social distancing that her friends here in Boston are contending with.
And living at home, Yang can take on some baking projects in her parents’ kitchen, mastering one of her favorite treats, cinnamon rolls.
Still, she “can’t wait for the day when I can safely return to Boston,” she says.
