Why should I go?
Here’s a chance to ditch the stuffy suits and dresses and experience live opera in your comfiest getup. Flowers and Opera is a live opera and musical theater show where retailers’ staircases and loading docks are transformed into stages for performers. There is limited cafe table seating, but guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. A live show wouldn’t be complete without a snack in hand, and guests can purchase delicious French crepes and drinks from Coolidge Corner’s Paris Creperie before and during the performances.
Organized by Simons Shoes, the footwear retailer, which partnered with local retailers and nonprofits, including Opera on Tap Boston, to stage the monthly performances through September. The concerts are performed by local soprano Kelley Hollis and members of Opera on Tap Boston. The series launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to draw people to the neighborhood at a time when many retailers were struggling.
As a token of gratitude, guests are able to bring home bouquets of flowers (hence the event’s title), courtesy of Trader Joe’s in Coolidge Corner. And while admission is free, guests are encouraged to bring some canned goods to help stock the Brookline Food Pantry, which has seen an increase in demand during the pandemic. There is a special need for toiletries, healthy snacks, canned soups, pet food, diapers, and condiments.
