It happens every year: seemingly overnight, BU’s Charles River and Fenway Campuses are transformed from largely empty sidewalks to bustling hubs. Over the course of a week—from Monday, August 29, to Monday, September 4, 11,500 undergrads and 981 graduate students moved into campus housing. And although official Move-in began on August 31, 333 new students arrived on August 29 to volunteer for this year’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP).
And despite four Red Sox home games at Fenway Park, a sold-out concert at Agganis Arena featuring Latinx rapper, singer, and composer Daddy Yankee, and increased traffic because of the MBTA Orange Line shutdown and the partial shutdown of the Green Line, it all went smoothly.
“Students, families, and helpers in need of complimentary parking and BU Shuttle (BUS) services were all able to be accommodated throughout what was a very busy Move-in week,” says Billy Hajjar, director of Parking & Transportation Services. “Everyone I encountered seemed very upbeat and positive.”
This year’s Move-in was abetted by mostly sunny skies and seasonal temperatures. The heavy rain held off until Labor Day, making a wet welcome for late arrivals.
“Our teams were busy all summer preparing for the week,” says Paul Riel, associate vice president for auxiliary services. “It’s great to see the residence halls filling up again with students from all over the world.”
We bring you some images that capture the excitement and the emotion of this year’s arrival.
