To Do Today: Visit Newburyport for Yankee Homecoming
Waterfront concert series, parade, and fireworks
What?
66th annual Yankee Homecoming, a nine-day festival celebrating Newburyport, Mass.
When?
Through August 7, 2022
Where?
Events are scattered across the coastal city of Newburyport, roughly a 50-minute drive or hour-long train ride from Boston.
How much?
Many events are free; sales and events that do cost money support local Newburyport businesses.
Why should I go?
It’s homecoming in Newburyport—Yankee Homecoming, that is. Today and all this week visit the city packed with colonial history and enjoy activities for all ages.
While other cities and towns have dropped this historic tradition, Newburyport has kept this festival going since 1958. This week, the city attracts local performers, artists, vendors, and small business owners to show off their talents for thousands of attendees.
Today, at 4:30 pm, cheer on your favorite restaurant’s server as they feel the need for speed in a waiter/waitress race while carrying a loaded tray. The first-place prize is $450. Tomorrow is a craft show featuring artisans from all over New England. Later this week, visit the US Coast Guard’s open house as they provide tours of their station on the Merrimack River (the city is in fact the birthplace of the US Coast Guard).
The celebration culminates with Saturday’s family day featuring free games, crafts, live music, and fireworks, and then a parade on Sunday.
A full list of events is available on the Yankee Homecoming website here.
