BU’s newest building provides spectacular views of Boston’s Fourth of July tradition

As dramatic as the daytime view from the 17th floor of Boston University’s Center for Computing & Data Sciences is, it’s hard to top the nighttime experience of watching Boston’s Fourth of July fireworks from the new building.

Janice Checchio, director of photography for Boston University and BU Today, was there Tuesday evening to capture the spectacle. The building opened in December, so this was the first opportunity to see the annual July 4 fireworks display over the Charles River from there.

The clouds and brief rain may have dampened the event for some and the view of the fireworks wasn’t quite the same as on a clear night, but seeing the fireworks explode, reflecting on the water and on the silhouetted boats below from nearly 300 feet up in the Boston skyline, was a pretty magical experience.

  2. Janice’s work is fantastic. I especially love her night shot of the CDS building from across the river. I use it as the “wallpaper” on my laptop. It was used to make a fundraising card to alumni like myself. I see she added three fireworks bursts to the photo to make BU’s “Happy Independence Day” card. These most recent photos were spoiled both by the amount of smoke the fireworks produce and the clouds.
