BU leaders expect students to encounter smooth sailing on campus for Move-in 2023.
Getting here, however, is another matter.
The August 30 kickoff for the repopulation of campus coincides with the Red Sox playing at nearby Fenway Park—the only home game during Move-in—and the closure of the Sumner Tunnel, which is scheduled to reopen September 1.
“Those flying into Boston’s Logan International Airport should expect driving delays between the airport and campus due to the closure” during Move-in’s first two days, says Billy Hajjar, director of BU Parking & Transportation Services. He recommends making the trek via the MBTA’s Blue Line train and Silver Line and Logan Express buses.
Hajjar also notes that students using moving trucks, box trucks, and moving vans should avoid the following roads, which have height restrictions as low as nine feet: Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road in Boston and Memorial Drive in Cambridge.
“While the closure of the Sumner Tunnel will be in place for the early days of Move-in, I do not see any impact to our schedules or street closures through the Move-in period,” says Robert Molloy, deputy chief of the Boston University Police Department (BUPD). The tunnel’s scheduled Friday, September 1, reopening is a lucky break, “as we move into the busy Labor Day weekend,” he adds.

To help on-campus traffic flow, the BUPD will station officers along Babcock Street, Bay State Road, Warren Towers, Student Village II, 10 Buick Street, Myles Standish Hall, and the Buswell Street/Park Drive area.
As has been true since the pandemic, students have been asked to choose in advance not just a specific Move-in day, but a specific shift as well: either 8 am to noon or 1 to 5 pm. Terriers have just those four hours to complete their move-in, so arriving early for your slot guarantees the least stressful rushing.
Matriculation will be held at Agganis Arena on Sunday, September 3, at 2 pm, with the BU Bridge closed intermittently to traffic that day between 12:45 and 1:45 pm for the student procession to the ceremony.
The University has also made provision for early-bird arrivals before Move-in starts, including about 400 participants and 134 leaders and coordinators in this year’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP), running August 30 to September 1.
