Highlights from Move-in 2023
Photo essay captures the energy and excitement of this annual BU ritual
Move-in 2023 began with the arrival of approximately 2,000 students on August 28, among them this year’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) volunteers. By Labor Day, a total of 11,587 undergraduates—comprising 3,142 freshmen and 660 transfer students—had settled into their campus dorm rooms and apartments. The busiest day of the week was Wednesday, August 30, with 3,500 students arriving in morning and afternoon shifts.
The annual event went off without a hitch, despite a soaking rain Wednesday, a Red Sox home game, and the closure of the Sumner Tunnel connecting Logan Airport to downtown Boston (it reopened, as scheduled, August 31).
Paul Riel, associate vice president for auxiliary services, credits the incredible teamwork across University departments for a seamless week.
“Our Move-in process was successful because of the deep partnerships between BU Housing, Office of Residence Life, Dean of Students office, BU Police Department, Parking & Transportation Services, BU Dining, and Campus Planning & Operations,” Riel says. “These dedicated teams worked tirelessly to provide a positive event that focused on the student and parent experience.”
We’ve pulled together more than two dozen photos taken by BU Photography staff and freelancers, who captured the carefully choreographed event all week long. Kenneth Freeman, BU interim president, and his wife, Janice, were on hand to greet many students and their families as they arrived on campus last week. Our final photo shows them greeting Ian Doud (ENG’27) and his mother, Stephanie, on August 31.
