Avoid Condom Failure: Unveiling the Secrets of Effective Protection

Avoid Condom Failure: Unveiling the Secrets of Effective Protection
Follow these simple tips for maximum protection
National Condom Week is February 14 to 21. Did you know that external condoms are about 98 percent effective at preventing STIs and pregnancy when used properly—but only 85 percent effective when not used properly?
Practicing safer sex starts even before getting to the sex part. It’s a good idea to practice putting a condom on before you need to use one with a partner. This is also a good way to learn what size fits you best—a condom that is too loose can slip off, and one that is too tight can break more easily.
Another way to prioritize your sexual safety is through proper storage and upkeep of your condoms and other safer sex supplies. We’ve compiled some tips to make sure that your condoms work effectively.
Out with the old.
Check the back of the wrapper for the expiration date before using it! Condoms can degrade in quality over time and dry out. Think of it like old rubber bands: they’re brittle, weak, and break easily.
Avoid hot and cold.
Exposing your condoms to very hot or very cold temperatures can decrease their effectiveness and increase the risk of breakage. So don’t leave your condoms in the car during a blizzard or a hot day!
Stay away from sharp and pointy items.
A punctured condom is no good. Keep your supplies away from sharp objects like keys, pens, and pocket knives. When opening a condom, don’t use scissors—and don’t rip it open with your teeth. Gently push the condom away from the edge and tear the wrapper along the perforated edges. While you’re at it, avoid keeping condoms in your wallet, as the pressure and friction can damage your supplies.
Where should you keep your condoms?
Find a place that is room temperature, dry, and out of direct sunlight. A bedside drawer, a purse, or a condom case are good options.

If you need condoms, you can always order them for free from Condom Fairy! Condom Fairy discreetly delivers safer sex supplies to your on- or off-campus mailbox. Choose from internal and external condoms, lubricants, and oral dams. They also have a new “Find your fit” package, allowing you to try different external condom sizes and materials and see what works best for you.
Psst…throughout February, if you use the code “XOXO” you can get flavored external condoms (latex) included in your order!
