Our ongoing fashion series finds stylish students and asks them how they achieve their look
With the semester off to a strong start and a hint of spring in the air, Comm Ave is bustling with Terriers who are melding fashion trends with practicality. Whether heading to class, grabbing a bite to eat, or seeing friends, these students make campus their fashion show.
BU Today interns got out before this week’s snow day (which did not have snow) to bring you this month’s roundup of stylish Terriers. Read on to find out more about their outfits and what inspires their personal style.

Aly Ruane (COM’27)
Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
I got [these cargo jeans] at PacSun. This sweatshirt is [from] the H&M men’s section. It was actually my brother’s, but he didn’t want it, so I was like, “I’m taking this,” because of the back [it has Big Bird’s back]. I was like, “I need that.” The shoes are just Brooks, but it’s just because I have flat feet so I have to wear sneakers.
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
Lazy. Lazy and/or colorful. Because I like bright colors sometimes.
Your favorite places to shop?
H&M, because they have really funny sweatshirts in the men’s section. I’ve always gone there. I’m like, “What are you little freaks up to now?” Then also, Garage. I don’t know if that’s a thing here, but in Philadelphia it is. It just has a lot of cool cargo pants and tops and stuff and they’re not that expensive. I got a dress there a few weeks ago, and it was around $25. It’s a nice dress.
What are your fashion influences?
My fashion influences were my brothers when I was younger, because I got all their hand-me-downs. So I was like, this is who I am now. And so I’ve just started actually dressing like a normal person. I don’t have any fashion influences other than when I see people on TikTok, and I’m like, I like that.
Your advice for students who want to look great on a budget?
Good advice would be to go thrifting. I go to the Goodwill near my dorm a lot when I don’t like what I have. You can find some cool stuff there, and it’s definitely going to be cheaper. You can also go on different websites like Depop, where people sell stuff. I know sometimes it’s probably expensive depending on what it is. Also, just going to very average department stores, you find a lot of good stuff. You just go to, you know, a Marshalls. Everything’s really cheap.

Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
The shoes are from BANGS Shoes. They come [with the embroidery]. Converse kills my feet, but these don’t. Then, the pants are from Target. Wanted to try something different. And the sweatshirt, TD Garden.
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
Cozy casual.
Your favorite places to shop?
Usually Goodwill or thrift stores. I go for what’s comfortable. This actually was an experimental outfit. I texted a friend of mine this morning and I said, “I think you’d be proud of me. I tried something different.”
What are your fashion influences?
I’m eventually aiming for a “dark academia” thing. I’m just assembling pieces along the way. So, just mostly going for comfort.
Your advice for students who want to look great on a budget?
I love the Goodwill by campus, and the one near the Medical Campus also has a lot of really good stuff. I just put on a podcast and go through the racks. Take some time to decompress from class, usually.

Mia Smith (CAS’25)
Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
I’m wearing checkered Vans from their website. I’ve got these cargo pants on, and I was just in Madrid last summer and they’re from a store there. Not to be so gatekeeping and cool, but they’re from Spain. This shirt is thrifted, I don’t know where it’s originally from. Lots of rings on each finger, except for one pinky, from so many places I can’t even keep track. [I got] the beanie on the street.
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
Maybe thrifted, not to be so indie and crazy.
Your favorite places to shop?
I like going to small thrift stores. I’m from New Hampshire, and I like going places at home better than in Boston.
What are your fashion influences?
I feel like I usually pick up a lot of things from my friends. I have very fashionable friends, so I’ve picked up stacking necklaces and stuff from them. They influence my fashion more than celebrities I don’t know.
Your advice for students who want to look great on a budget?
Again, thrifting. Find places that have cheap clothes, which are usually cooler than new clothes. When I say I got this [beanie] on the street, like it was in the dirt on the street and I washed it, so whatever you can get for free is where it’s at.

Saurabh Singh (ENG’24)
Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
This jacket is Zara, jeans from Levi’s, and this shirt is from TJ Maxx. These are my friend’s shoes, and the watch is Fast Track, which is an Indian company.
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
Classic.
What are your fashion influences?
I don’t really have any influences. I dress like this semi-normally. I normally wear a Levi’s denim jacket or a corduroy jacket.
Your advice for students who want to look great on a budget?
I go to TJ Maxx. They usually have a fairly decent range of budget [items that are] not too expensive

Everett Guermont (ENG‘25)
Guermont says it is a tradition for the club ski racing team to wear their gear in public during race season.
Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
I found these boots used about seven years ago. The suit is about eight years old. The helmet is new, I got it from POC [a ski outfitter]. I gotta protect my noggin—no concussions. Goggles are four to five years old, and they’re Oakley.
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
This is kind of on the outer balance of my fashion sense here, but I think I rock it. I wear it on race weekends. So I wear this two out of seven days a week
What are your favorite places to shop?
I’m not a big shopper. Gap, maybe? If there’s a theme for a party, I’ll go to Goodwill and throw something together.
Who are your fashion influences?
Lady Gaga comes to mind. I don’t know that she actually inspires me, but she has a great fashion sense.

Annika Easterby (CGS’25)
Tell us about your outfit. Where did you get each piece?
These boots I just got the other day—I think they were 20 bucks—at Buffalo Exchange. The socks are acquired from somebody. Same with the leg warmers. They were a gift from somebody. Tights, probably 10 bucks at Target. Thrifted skirt, thrifted shirt [from Los Angeles].
How would you describe your fashion sense in a few words?
I guess eclectic is a good word. I like different themes of everything. I’m really into black right now, with little pops of colors and different designs. I wear something different every single day.
What are your favorite places to shop?
Goodwill bins. That’s where a lot of my clothes are from. This shirt is from the bins. I’ve been going to little secondhand shops, like 2nd STREET. You can get stuff for cheap there, but they also sell second-hand designers. They have locations in New York, Chicago, and L.A.
Who are your fashion influences?
Sophia Álvarez. I don’t think there’s a word for [her style]. She’s probably my main influence. I know she’s walked for a few people before. She has really cool pieces. I saw her do some sparkly silver stuff, so I’ve been into that.
Your advice for students who want to look great on a budget?
You can definitely buy stuff online. Shop on eBay for clothes. Shop on Buyee, [which is shipped] from Japan. EBay is a good one. People really don’t do eBay enough… Definitely hit the [Goodwill] bins if you can find bins. You can spend an hour or two there and get some really good stuff.
