Class of 2024 gathers to celebrate at annual Senior Breakfast, where Senior Week lineup, honorary degree recipients, and more will be revealed
There’s no sleeping in for seniors this morning—the Class of 2024 Senior Breakfast is being celebrated at the George Sherman Union Thursday at 10 am. And if it’s anything like previous years, seniors will start lining up around 9:30 to get a good table.
But the highlight of the morning—considered the official kickoff event of the 2024 Commencement ceremonies—will be the details about Boston University’s 151st Commencement, which will be held on Sunday, May 19, on Nickerson Field.
After a brief greeting by event emcee Jason Campbell-Foster, BU dean of students, and a prayer by Rev. Robert Allan Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, the 3,699 seniors will dig into a meal of fresh seasonal fruit, pastries, and roasted grape tomato and mozzarella strata (vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options also available).
Then seniors will receive some important updates: the names of the main Commencement speaker, Baccalaureate speaker, honorary degree recipients, and the winners of the University’s highest teaching honors—the Metcalf Cup and Prize and the Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Student leaders will talk about Senior Week activities and the progress of the Class Gift Campaign.
The morning will also feature live music and performances by the BU Jazz Combo and the Treblemakers—and special guest appearances.
This year’s graduating class arrived on campus in August 2020 under extraordinary circumstances. The nation was just five months into the COVID-19 pandemic, and the new Terriers spent their freshman year taking classes remotely or in person, but with strict masking and social distancing protocols in place.
Happily, they will finish their college careers with proper pomp and circumstance.
Senior Breakfast is at 10 am on May 2, 2024, in the George Sherman Union Metcalf Ballroom, with overflow seating available throughout the facility.
