There are 2 comments on Sunday in the Park with George Opens at Booth Theatre

  1. I was so disappointed with this production as a student at BU–The direction was too mechanical and I barely felt for the characters. The students as always were tremendous–the training there is fantastic–but the direction flattened the performances. For example, in SUNDAY, a sure fire moving moment in the production felt too pretty and too polished..and how many times do we need to see the turntable move? It was too distracting to not allow the actors to move themselves.

During the same weekend, I happen to see the school’s production of YERMA which was presented at the smaller STUDIO ONE theatre at 855 Commonwealth Ave which was without a doubt, incredible…beautifully and imaginatively directed. The play by Federico Garcia Lorca can be a tricky one to direct since the script can be a bit redundant (For example, by the third scene, we know she wants a child–we get the point) but the play was so creatively and movingly directed capturing the reality and dreams of the main character,The cast–all tremendous–beautifully inhabited the expressiveness of the play–it was sad, exhilarating, passionate, sexy, uplifting and cathartic. The production challenged the students to go beyond “pretty” and to be expressively and deeply vulnerable–The movement and direction in particular was impeccable and something I would see at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.–it was that good. Sadly it wasn’t as heavily advertised as SUNDAY since SUNDAY was at the Booth theatre which was a shame. I do think all productions should be equitably advertised. All in all, the students and the training at the SOT is top notch.
