There are 24 comments on Trump Might Govern as an Authoritarian. Is That What His Voters Want?

  1. Prof Longman cites FBI stats showing serious crime was down. Is he referring to the inaccurate #s cited by Kamala Harris in the debate or the “revised” ones the FBI put out just before the election?

  2. I have a question for the professors and maybe the editor(s) as well: What do you suppose it means, if anything, that there are still no comments on the article by early afternoon? Isn’t this an enormous university? Why so little interest? (thank you)

    1. I’d list three reasons: the report was buried – published during the Thanksgiving holiday when no one was paying attention; few people read BU Today for political commentary — unless someone says something truly controversial; most people who are concerned by the personality cult around Trump and his unique combination of bluster, braggadocio, and bullying are in shock or despair— curled up in the fetal position, as one comedian put it.

  3. The Left’s treatment of Trump has completely blown up in their face. He is not messing around this time. Yall shouldn’t have raided his home, arrested him, and convicted him on felony counts that everybody knows are bogus. Yes he will be going after those who harmed his family, Kash Patel will be their worst nightmare. They abused their power to attack him, not it’s Trump’s turn.

    1. You forget to state the true reason his home was raided, had he just returned the documents when they asked none of that would have happened. I get it, for you that doesent matter, it’s ok for him to do things that you or i would have went to jail for long ago. No one abused their power.

    2. Trump policies will hurt most Americans. Those people who voted for him can accept there part in the danger & chaos that we are about to experience. I don’t understand why anyone would look to punish people who disagree with them. Or why anyone would support let vote such a dangerous minded person to the highest office in the country! To give them the power to hurt innoncent people. I can’t wrap my mind around how anyone thinks evil doers will make this a better country. Unfortunately we will all soon begin to suffer because he has wasted no time with the madness. I can’t turn on the television without hearing another crazy mindless stunt from Trump & it’s NEVER ANYTHING that seems it’s going to make something better for anybody in this country.

      1. It’s terrifying and maddening. More rational people like you and me and many others are being sucked into the chaos everyday and everywhere. This is that part of the plan that trump is using to keep people confused and unsure of where to go or start or what to focus on. We become paralyzed and sit back and wait for what will be coming at us next. In the mean time, he’s mobilized just enough of his “forces” that when we finally get moving, we’re behind and any chance of holding him off will become that much more difficult. He’s not wasting any time. We can’t either. Every single day we need to commit to doing something, anything, that will ultimately help in even the most minute way. I’m committing to calling/writing my representatives. I am calmly sharing bits and pieces of our current situation, as I see it, with others and trying to be patient with other viewpoints. Maybe I can inspire someone, or myself, to organize a rally or, at the very least, attend one. Now is the time to choose our cause and make our own plan….and engage!!!

    1. Isn’t an educational institution the exact place to express and discuss opinions, views and the ways in which we all understand things? Is that not how we gain knowledge of other’s approaches to life? If we learn the thought processes, communication styles and information used to form those opinions and views, we are better prepared and more open to accept those who aren’t on “our side”. Aren’t the ones who pick “sides”, the ones who don’t want open discussions that include views that differ from “their side”, un-American? Give me experience, diversity, education and opinions – open discussions for “us”, ALL Americans!

  4. I appreciate this article. As a person of color who is frustrated and extremely anxious for the next 4 years with the president elect, this article help me understand the what & why (and what I can do) related to this tragic situation we are in.

  5. The social psychologist Marilynn Brewer, along with a number of her colleagues, repeatedly found95 that white individuals with a very well-sorted set of national, religious, political, occupational, and recreational identities are significantly less accepting of cultural diversity and affirmative action, and more intolerant of social out-groups including African Americans, Mexican immigrants, Muslims, and gays and lesbians, even when accounting for age, education, and ideology. Maga is quite simply a reflection of the hate that Trump represents.

    1. Well said and it is true, MAGA’s don’t really adapt well to change, and if they perceive they are losing ground (even though they are not) with anything they hold dear, then well, here we are. Yes, MAGA is a reflection of the hate that he represents.

  6. I am Canadian – a retired physician. I am dismayed that so many people support president-elect Trump. It has shattered my worldview. The only thing I can think of to rescue my worldview is to imagine that those people who support Trump and his acolytes are desperate and fearful. What it is likely varies from person to person but the common theme seems to me to be fear. It may be identity fear, fear of being irrelevant, economic fears, fear of too much change occurring too quickly, and more. The common link is fear. However, fear is not sufficient. It must be buttressed with ignorance. People cannot realistically believe that someone like Trump will help them whatever their fears are. Therefore, their support for Trump must be some kind of desperate attempt to send a message. However, what is the message? Unfortunately, I suspect a lot of people will be struggling with cognitive dissonance for a very long time in the future. Finally, I interpret ‘the message’ to be largely a fear of the future – the fear that the growing gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ (however that is defined) will result in increasing divisiveness and suffering – ultimately leaving the majority of citizens to a dark fate. Therein lies a potential solution for politicians and leaders – make it clear that people are heard, understood, and their fears addressed meaningfully. Enough is enough. One word – limitarianism.

    1. I am coming to realize that humans are extraordinarily susceptible to manipulation through propaganda and misinformation, with only a small minority who are able detect and defend against it. I knew this but I fully under estimated our susceptibility. I suppose it goes back to our tribal roots, where critical thinking would get us in trouble. So I doubt that fear is the direct cause per se, as much as rapacious media billionaires who, in the name of free enterprise and free speech, have harnessed our susceptibility to manipulation with finely tuned algorithms that exploit fear but also greed and outrage. Meanwhile entrepreneurial liars (Donald Trump being just one) have harnessed the algorithms to amass profit and power. It’s Ironic, but the free market and free speech may have caused our downfall. If I could do one thing it would be to outlaw social media algorithms, which amplify fear, greed and outrage, turning us into warring tribes. Good by America. It was nice knowing you.

      1. Beautifully expressed. It is a tough time for humans. We have intelligence, but not wisdom. It doesn’t look so good to me, but it is difficult to make predictions…especially about the future. I think the only actual solution goes something like this: be kind.

  7. Authoritarianism wouldn’t be a worry today. If the Democratic & Republican Party been allowed to take turns waging war against the US Constitution with near absolute impunity.
The US Constitution has been eroded to the point of non-existence instead of strengthen to restrain the hand of government at all times for all reasons.

That alone should speak volumes about the intent of those in government.

Poisoned partisan politics fathered this mess and Washington warned us.

The government any government will never be anything better than an at best necessary evil, but a necessary evil is still an evil nonetheless. Something which the American people have forgotten or been conditioned to disbelieve.

Maybe now the American people will remember. Instead of blindly allow those in government to shower themselves in powers the government isn’t supposed possess.

  8. I’m your friend to the North, I have loved your country, a country that was the “Super Power of the World.” That was highly respected by many countries around the world. Unfortunately times have changed, this individual that’s been voted in with a Criminal Record and very dangerous.
We will suffer economically in our countrywide and jobs will be lost, businesses will close and our dollar has already sunk to an all time low!
But what surprises me is many people are still believing this leader is great!
Unfortunately, sooner than later the majority of the population will soon be lead to a place, they will never forget! Is their freedom as they know it will be gone and you will be lead down a pathway of life you will never know peace, freedom of democracy again! There’s a great song you should listen to well you have the chance, “EVE OF DESTRUCTION.”

  9. I am amazed by the number of people that suggest that President Trump wants to or become a dictator. This the stupidest idea and statement anyone could ever make! I am 82 yeas old, college educated, have a law school degree ( on borrowed money, which was paid back). For anyone to think that I, or any other republican, would ever tolerate Trump or anyone else, trying to become a dictator in our country . I love this country as much as any other person in United States. This is a great country because of our democracy.

I got of school owing a lot of money, as did my brother, who has a chemical engineering degree. Also,it took my brother seven years to get his degree because he dropped out of school several times to work and save money and then return back to school. He also has enough money to last him several lifetimes. This is the greatest country in world. It is people like myself and my brother that love this country. Life is not always easy, but the rewards that come to people in this country that are willing to strive for it are without limits.

The democratic party has a core base of people that have not and never will not strive to take care of themselves and their family, but rather live a lifetime “sucking on the pubic tit”. I do not want me or my family to be counted in the numbers of that crowd. Without that core base I referred to above, and those that sympathize for these lazy people, the democrats would never win a single election without that core base

I have rambled on too long. I wish everyone the best that may read my ramblings. Always remember to ask, “ God, please bless America”. It is the greatest country the world has ever has ever known.

    1. Brother, you’ve successfully had the wool pulled over your eyes.

Your qualm should be not with the lazy teet-suckers, but with the wealthy elite who would seek to profit from our ruin. Or maybe you agree that there should be an ever-increasing wealth disparity between the classes.

There will always be lazy moochers, but you risk becoming callous if you let this minority spoil your good-will.

I believe what truly separates the right from the left is their respective orientations on the fear-magnanimity axis. Cynicism causes ones worldview to contract, lending favorable scope only to ones chosen few (tribalism), while tolerance and temperance can give way to an environment in which even the most wretched can flourish (humanism).

We must be vigilant against the call to our baser nature. Especially when our pettiness can be used as tools by the elite to distract us from their bigger heist.

  10. I was one of those people who was hesitant to believe that anyone with enough support to win an American election could threaten our democracy, but watching what the Trump Administration has done, in just their first few weeks in office, I have changed my mind. One after another, the Trump Admin, with the help of Elon Musk has attacked the weak. First they went after immigrants, in an unprecedented manner, referring to all of them as “criminals”and either deporting or sending them to Guantanamo, or other less democratic countries, where they’ve been locked up under deplorable conditions. Then Elon Musk and Trump attacked federal workers, who are no different than any other working class. Americans, purposely torturing them, taking their livelihoods and even destroying the agencies they worked for, using lies and disinformation to do so. All this has been accomplished by ignoring the rule of law and the constitution. Now they’re attacking our military and our free press, even sucking up to dictators , like Vladimir Putin while betraying longtime allies, like the EU and Ukraine. This is purposeful. This is systematic. This is anti democratic, and it’s hurting ALL of us. This is not the future I imagined for my country, one of the greatest democracies in the world and it’s frightening. Americans who love their liberty need to come together and stop this, before it’s too late.
