How BU Athletics Helped These Student-Athletes Build Lifelong Skills and Friendships
Terriers share their stories of personal growth and teamwork
In honor of National Student-Athlete Day on April 6, we’re celebrating the dedication, hard work, and perseverance of the student-athletes who balance academics, athletics, and everything in between. At Boston University, our athletes aren’t just excelling in their respective sports—they’re also making a lasting impact on campus and beyond. From forging lifelong friendships to pushing themselves in both the classroom and on the field, BU’s student-athletes share how being part of BU Athletics has shaped their college experience.
Take a look at what some of our incredible student-athletes had to say about their experiences being part of BU Athletics.

Jasmine Wu (Sargent’27)
Women’s Lightweight Rowing
“Being a student-athlete at BU has given me countless opportunities. My sport has taught me so much about myself and continues to push me both athletically and academically. My teammates inspire me every day as we show up for each other, and I’m lucky to call them my second family.”

Tyler Johnson (COM’25)
Men’s Soccer, #23
“Being a student-athlete has impacted me by giving me the launching platform and routine to go out and be the change I want to see in the world, creating a venture that I wished existed when I came to BU. When you are in an environment where you are surrounded by the constant 24/7 support of being on a team, success is the only outcome.”

Alex Law (COM’27)
Women’s Ice Hockey, #17
“Being a student-athlete at BU has taught me how to balance commitment with passion, giving me a second family in my teammates.”

Jimmy O’Connell (Questrom’25)

“Being on an athletics team at BU has made my college experience so much more exciting, giving me a great group of friends and keeping me active. Balancing sports and school has been challenging, but it has taught me how to manage my time and make the most of every moment.”

Ella Erickson (Sargent’25)
Women’s Swimming & Diving
“Being a student-athlete at BU has taught me resilience, dedication, and the importance of teamwork. The incredible support and resources provided by BU Athletics have allowed me to succeed both in and out of the pool, shaping me into a stronger athlete and student.”

George Kreidler (Questrom’27)
Men’s Rowing
“BU Athletics has given me a sense of community that began the moment I stepped foot on campus. I am constantly surrounded by friends and familiar faces, and I always enjoy running into other athletes around campus.”

Audrey Ericksen (COM’27)
Women’s Basketball, #21
“Being an athlete at BU has been such a cool experience. The biggest takeaway I’ll leave with after my time at BU is the people. From top to bottom, I have great relationships with everyone in athletics. Our athletic director, Drew, has welcomed me to campus since day one and continues to get me hyped for upcoming games and seasons. Kate Bergstrom has also been amazing—always checking up on us and cheering us on, even on the road. My coaches are a key reason why I chose BU. But I think the most important relationships have been with other athletes. My best friends are all part of BU Athletics—some on my team, others on lacrosse and hockey. The culture among BU Athletics is very strong, and I am extremely grateful to be a part of it.”

Kyomi Apalit (SHA’27)
Women’s Softball, #10
“Being a student-athlete at BU is an incredible privilege that has given me lifelong friendships, personal growth, and unforgettable memories. Every time I put on my jersey, I take great pride in representing BU, and I’m grateful for the support system and community that uplift and celebrate one another’s successes.”

Ellie Roan (COM’26)
Women’s Track & Field
“Being part of BU Athletics has strengthened my leadership skills by teaching me accountability and resilience in an individual sport like track and field. It has also connected me with amazing athletes beyond track and field, expanding my support network.”

Tommy Garofalo (CAS’26)
Men’s Lacrosse, #40
“BU Athletics allows me to play the sport I love in the city I love while providing me with a top-level education and numerous resources to help me succeed on and off the field.”
BU Athletics has given these student-athletes lifelong friendships, valuable lessons, and a strong support system, and we are lucky to have them as part of our Terrier community. Keep working hard on and off the field, Terriers!
