Data Science vs Computer Science: What’s the Difference Between These Two Majors?
Boston University seniors Neeza Singh (and Valentina Haddad met as freshmen in an introductory computer science course. At the time, Singh CDS’25) was majoring in computer science and Haddad (CAS’25) in computer engineering. Both later changed their majors, but have remained best friends. Haddad switched to a computer science major after discovering she preferred working with software rather than hardware. Singh developed an interest in AI and machine learning, and decided to pursue a major in data science. Her aptitude for statistics and probability sealed the deal.
In the latest installment of our video series Compare Mode, which pairs two Terriers from related majors and explores what makes each unique, Singh and Haddad dive into the differences between their respective majors. They discuss how they found their way, one to data science, the other to computer science, the kinds of classes they’re required to take, the wide range of internship and career opportunities available in their field, and what they hope to do post-Commencement.
