University's top student athletes receive honors

Chris Drury (CAS'98), the 1998 winner of the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's outstanding player, and Rosemary Ryan (SAR'98), a four-time winner of the America East women's cross country title, have been named Boston University's Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Four other athletes were also recognized for their accomplishments: women's tennis player Michelle Magid (CAS'98) was named top female student athlete, and runner Karl Rasmussen (COM'98) was voted top male student athlete. Sharing the John Simpson award for "enthusiastic senior leadership" are football cocaptain Randy Smith (COM'98) and women's soccer cocaptain Maura Mullane (SED'98).

In addition, Boston University Executive Vice President Joseph Mercurio received the athletic department's campus community award.

Drury, the most honored player in the 77-year history of hockey at BU, is the University's all-time leading goal scorer, with 113, and the third all-time leading point producer, with 213. During the 1997-98 season the Trumbull, Conn., native helped lead the Terriers to a 28-8-2 record. They won the Beanpot Tournament and the Hockey East regular-season title for the fourth straight year. Statistically, Drury finished the year leading the team in goals, 28, points, 57, shorthanded goals, 4, and hat tricks, 2.

Ryan, who was captain of the women's cross country team this year, won the America East title and finished 15th at the NCAA Championships. A native of Limerick, Ireland, she earned All-America honors, and during the recently completed indoor track season, won the 5,000-meter run at the America East Championships. Ryan was also named to the All-East cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams. During the 1997 outdoor track season, she set the conference record in the 3,000-meter run and won the New England title in the same event.

She has posted a 12-0 record in America East tournament matches. Accepted into the School of Medicine's MMEDIC program as a sophomore, Magid is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Medical Honor Society, was the distinguished sophomore in CAS in 1995, won the honors program writing competition the same year, and was an American Academy Distinguished Student in 1997.
