The November 1956 Homecoming Parade seems to have taken an unusually short route: around the bases at Braves Field, which BU purchased in 1953. To the left of this picture is the old right field open pavilion, and to the right, the covered grandstand along the first-base line. Minus the overhang, that grandstand still exists as part of Nickerson Field. The "Smash the Barrier" reference on the Homecoming float may refer to Capt. Chuck Yaeger's first supersonic flight, in 1947, and it does indeed look like a papier mâché terrier sitting atop an X-1 rocket -- aimed at a football goalpost.
