CELOP offers new part-time program
International professionals who are working in Boston and international
students who are pursuing full-time degrees will be able to attend part-time
courses offered at BU's Center for English Language and Orientation Programs
(CELOP). "We're very excited to be able to open up our courses to
this new population," says Margot Valdivia, director of CELOP. "Over
the years, we've had a lot of requests from people who were already here
in Boston - working at a career or pursuing a full-time degree - and only
had a few hours a week to study English. We also will be able to better
serve BU's community of international students and scholars, as well as
their spouses and partners." CELOP is currently accepting registration
for the fall semester, which runs from September 30 through December 12.

New SAR student residence
Sargent House, a newly renovated student residence at 205
Bay State Rd., opened to SAR students for the first time this September.
Currently, 26 students reside in the fully furnished brownstone. The lounge
area will be open once a month to SAR alumni and students for the school's
Fireside Chat Discussion Series, which kicks off on September 18. Alan
Jette, dean of the college, will deliver a talk entitled Exercise: It's
Never Too Late!
SSW dean new editor in chief of social work journal

| Tuyet Le Nguyen (right), a Vietnamese social worker from Ho Chi Minh City, visited the School of Social Work on Monday, September 9. Nguyen, who is exploring different social work programs and practices in the United States in order to develop culturally sensitive programs suited to Vietnam and its issues, participated in a roundtable discussion with faculty and administrators, including Kay Jones(left), an SSW clinical associate professor and director of the Refugee and Immigrant Training Program. Wilma Peebles-Wilkins, dean of the School of Social Work, has been appointed as the new editor in chief of Children and Schools: A Journal of Social Work Practice. Two special issues of the practitioner-to-practitioner resource are planned for 2003 - one on early childhood education and one on evidence-based practice with school-related issues.
