Announcement: Dr. Mike Oshins

Dear All,

This is one message I wish I did not have to write. I am very sad to share that Dr. Michael Oshins passed away last night after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Our hearts go out to Mike’s wife Alison, and his three children who are all members of the BU and SHA family: daughter Abi, and sons Jeremy and Zachary.

A distinguished member of SHA for thirty years, Mike was instrumental in shaping the current curriculum and culture at SHA. He was the first instructor to earn the title of Associate Professor of the Practice at our school. He has taught a multitude of our core and elective courses, including Marketing, Service Quality & Human Resource Management, and Leveraging Technology in Hospitality &Tourism, and, of course, Introduction to Hospitality, and Leadership classes – both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Just last week he was inducted into the esteemed Boston University’s Scarlet Key Honor Society, the highest honor bestowed by the University.

Please know that funeral services for Mike are scheduled for this Sunday, September 29, at 11 A.M. at Temple Beth Elohim, 10 Bethel Rd., in Wellesley, MA.

Shiva for Mike will also be held at Temple Beth Elohim, Tuesday, October 1, from 7-9 P.M.

For all students, faculty, and staff, counseling support is available, through the following resources:

  • Marsh Chapel chaplains can be reached at 617-353-3560.
  • Behavioral Medicine providers at Student Health Services can be reached at 617-353-3569.
  • Counseling is also available for faculty and staff through the Faculty & Staff Assistance office, 617-353-5381.
  • The Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders is at 617-353-9610.

There are times when words fail and this is one of them. I can’t begin to articulate right now what Mike has meant to SHA over all these years except to say that I can’t even imagine SHA without him. We were fortunate to have known him, and all of us are blessed to have had him in our lives.

Sincerely,

Arun Upneja
