BU School of Hospitality Administration Expands Masters-Level Senior Living Program with a Weekend Masters Degree Program for Executives-in-Training
(March 1, 2022) Boston, MA – Boston University School of Hospitality Administration (BU SHA) Dean Arun Upneja, Ph.D., and Leora Halpern Lanz, ISHC, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Faculty Chair of the School’s Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH) degree program, have announced a Weekend Masters Program in Senior Living, which will launch in Fall 2022. Designed for professionals and executives, the courses in this part-time program will be offered on weekends and will take two years to complete.
Comparable to the full-time MMH degree, the Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH) curriculum weekend structure for Senior Living concentration students will offer the core business courses in the Fall terms: Leadership, Financial Management, Branding, and the program’s flagship course, Innovation & Disruption. Spring term courses consist of the existing Senior Living courses including Senior Living Operations, Monitoring the Resident Journey Experience, and the Business of Senior Care. Electives are also available in Hospitality Real Estate Financing & Feasibility and other SHA classes, as well as through the Boston University School of Social Work (Social Policy and Programs in Aging; Clinical Practice with Older Adults) and Boston University’s School of Public Health (Individual, Community and Population Health).
Applications for executives are due on May 1, 2022. BU SHA welcomes questions about the application and program requirements. No GRE necessary.

Tuition-Match Incentive Program
Senior Living companies are encouraged to consider this two-year, part-time degree as an additional employee retention vehicle. The School of Hospitality Administration will also provide tuition assistance to match the contribution from the employer. This tuition-match incentive for high-performing associates, such as Executive Directors in training, is designed as a reward and recognition tool for employers to strengthen and retain the talent pool in this most important discipline of our society.
“In response to positive feedback and rapid growth in our Senior Living Program at the Masters level, we developed this weekend program to equip professionals working in the field with the education, experience, and credentials to catapult their career to the next level,” stated Dean Arun Upneja.
“Senior Living has become an increasingly multi-faceted business sector, requiring advanced knowledge of its many business components, but from a specialized hospitality perspective,” said Scott Eckstein, director of the senior living program. Eckstein was appointed in 2021 to lead this program based on his 30+ years of diverse research, analysis, development, operations, and education experience in the senior living space, bringing expertise and an extensive network of resources to the students and the program.
Instructors include executives in the Senior Living sector: Scott Eckstein, director of the MMH Senior Living program, Fara Gold McLaughlin, Chief Revenue Officer of Senior Living Foresight, Chris Arruda, Chief Investment Officer of SALMON Health and Retirement, and Matthew Hollingshead, Executive Director of Business Development Hebrew SeniorLife.
