Apostolos Ampountolas
Assistant Professor of Hospitality Finance; Chair of Graduate Programs
Apostolos Ampountolas, Ph.D., CQF, FHEA, joined the Boston University School of Hospitality Administration faculty after many accomplished years of teaching, research, and working for international hotels and travel companies. He holds a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Exeter in the UK, a Certificate of Quantitative Finance from the CQF Institute, and a Diploma in Accounting.
Most recently, Apostolos was a visiting professor at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in the Department of Business Administration, at the Mathematics for Business and Economics chair. Before joining Boston University, he was an Associate Professor at Cesar Ritz Colleges in Switzerland and an adjunct instructor at Washington State University, where he taught a variety of hospitality finance, accounting, analytics, asset management, and revenue management courses.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ampountolas has specialized in pricing optimization models and revenue performance, supporting European companies seeking to enhance their financial performance. Hence, he enjoyed a 20-year successful international career in the travel and hospitality industries, where he developed extensive expertise and provided consulting services to companies in the industry sector. Apostolos began his hospitality career as a tour operator for Atena Travel Ltd., a path that he followed to management roles at other tour operators, including Tui Hellas S.A., Plotin S.A. (Thomas Cook AG), Zeus S.A. (Thomas Cook AG), youtravel.com, and at the Kuoni Group as the Area Sourcing Manager Northern Europe for Kuoni Global Travel Services and the Head of Hotel & Destination Services Contracting Europe for Kuoni Destination Management.
Today, as an academic and researcher, he focuses on finance and data analytics, including pricing optimization and revenue management, risk management, forecasting model analyses, financial analysis of companies’ performance, volatility in investment markets, investment behavior, and high-dimensional big data analyses using machine learning techniques and consumer choice models. He frequently presents his research at international conferences like the International Symposium on Forecasting, the RevME-REMAPS conference, and the INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Conference.
Dr. Ampountolas is an active member of the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF), the Association of Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business (IMA), and the INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section. He is also a founding member of the Higher Hospitality Academy of Switzerland and a consultant operator offering services to companies using hospitality-applied research for informational discernment that leads to real business growth.
