Fur-Bearing Trout

Where They Live
They can be found in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Canada. They can sometimes be found in the Great Lakes Region.
Their History
- The creature evolved its thick coat to protect itself from the extreme cold of northern waters.
- This species of trout owes its fur to four jugs of hair tonic that were accidentally spilled into the Arkansas River during the 1870s.
Legends say that fur-bearing trout were first found by Europeans when Scottish settlers.
One wrote home saying they had discovered many "furred animals and fish". On enquiery, he sent home a specimen of the fish.
If true, this story proves the second theory false.
Fun Facts
- Fur-Bearing trouts mounted as trophies can be found hanging on walls throughout the Great Lakes region of North America.
- Some experts believe that as the weather grows warmer during the spring the fur-bearing trout sheds its fur, then regrows its coat as winter returns. This may help explain why trout with full coats of fur are so rarely encountered.
