🎥 About the Movie: The Plan C film documents the grassroots fight to expand access to abortion pills across the United States, keeping hope alive during a global pandemic and the fall of Roe v. Wade.

The film follows Francine Coeytaux, a public health expert and the co-founder of the organization Plan C, as she and her team fight to expand knowledge of - and access to - the abortion pill across the United States. The film reveals the grassroots network and pipelines Plan C built, the criticism they faced, and the hope they have for the future.

• Research Fellows work closely with a faculty member on a research project.
• Practice Fellows work with an external community organization to gain practical experience.

All of our research and all practice fellowship opportunities are eligible to count as a practicum, and can be registered separately with the Practicum Office upon award of the fellowship. 

All MPH students are encouraged to apply. 

January 24: State of Black Maternal Health Roundtable Series

In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,  Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) and Massachusetts Department of Public Health,  the Ellen Story Commission on Postpartum Depression will be hosting a series of virtual Black Maternal Health Roundtable discussions focusing on a variety of topics on the subject matter. This first topic in the series will be an overview of some of the existing systems that we have in MA and how we can reimagine a brighter future.

December 8: 24th Annual MCH Forum

The Annual MCH Forum is an opportunity for MCH Fellows and MPH students to present their work to the BUSPH and Boston Community.

Students can choose to present a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation or create a poster to discuss their work with attendees during a 1 hour session.

Diversity Scholars Leadership Program

Interested in applying to our Diversity and Scholars Leadership Program (DSLP) (URM and/or LGBTQIA)?

The DSLP is designed to support future health professionals who want to contribute as scholars and leaders in the fight for racial and social justice and health equity. There are two arms of the DSLP: (1) DSLP-URM for students from under-represented minority communities and (2) as of 2021, DSLP-LGBTQIA+ for students from LGBTQIA+ communities. Our aim is to create an environment in which students from underrepresented minority and LGBTQIA+ students can flourish and be connected to the knowledge, wisdom, and experience of a strong network of peers and alumnae who precede them as leaders.

October 17: Culturally-informed Substance Use Recovery Webinar

Seeking Women’s Health Justice

Model of gender and culturally-informed care for Latina women facing substance use and mental health challenges

Resources for women in recovery from substance use disorder are challenged by underfunding and under-appreciation of women’s specific needs. The opioid epidemic disproportionately affects women and providing effective and sustainable treatment approaches is imperative.

For over two decades, Entre Familia, a program in the Boston area, has provided effective and appropriate care and has developed a number of best practices.

Entre Familia offers a 6-to-12-month residential model of treatment that incorporates bilingual and bicultural programming, offering gender-specific approaches to treatment for women who may be pregnant, postpartum, and/or are primary caregivers for their children. Coordinated and comprehensive care is key to supporting women in recovery.

In a culture that prioritizes funding for warfare ($800+ billion to the U.S. military), while spending for human services and needs is inadequate, inhumane and unjust (less than $100 billion), this webinar explores ways to seek health justice for women in recovery.

By becoming informed and activated about women’s health and social issues, we can meaningfully ensure that the intersection of women’s health and peace will be justice.

Speakers:

Hortensia de los Angeles Amaro, PhD, is Distinguished University Professor and Senior Scholar on Community Health at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and the Robert Stemple College of Public Health and Social Work, Florida International University.

Rita Nieves RN, MPH, LICSW is a public health administrator with over 25 years of management experience in developing and providing services to persons with substance use and mental health problems.  She has worked both in Puerto Rico and the US in substance use treatment and communicable disease control.

The MCH Fair showcases various research fellowship and practice fellowship opportunities offered through the Center. MCH research and practice fellowships allow students to engage and work with faculty and community partners. Additionally, the Center will have a session on the Diversity Scholars Leadership Program (DSLP), which supports students from underrepresented minority and LGBTQIA+ communities.
