BU MET’s Actuarial Science Master’s Degree Earns Bronze Award
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) has announced that BU’s Metropolitan College has qualified for the Bronze Tier within the CAS University Recognition Program, which recognizes academic institutions with a demonstrated commitment to preparing property and casualty actuaries through their educational offerings.
“We are pleased to honor universities through the CAS University Recognition Program,” said Victor Carter-Bey, DM, CEO of the Casualty Actuarial Society. “Recognition at the Bronze Tier demonstrates that Metropolitan College is committed to exposing their students to the property and casualty actuarial career path through their participation in the CAS University Liaison, Student Central, Student Ambassador, and Academic Central Programs.”
The CAS is the world’s only actuarial organization focused exclusively on property and casualty risks, serving over 10,000 members worldwide. CAS members work for insurance companies, educational institutions, state insurance departments, federal government agencies, independent consulting firms, and many other organizations that require management of risk.
Metropolitan College offers the only MS in Actuarial Science program in New England—with a curriculum designed to help develop a deep understanding of the mathematics and modeling techniques that form the core of actuarial calculations, as well as competency in the computer skills required to analyze data using software tools popular in insurance, risk management, and related industries.
Not only that, but actuarial studies at BU MET also assist students in preparing for examinations offered by the CAS and the Society of Actuaries (SOA)—examinations that are critical to the career of an actuary, helping decide which direction one takes in the field.
Students who follow the SoA exam track will typically work in areas such as life insurance, health insurance, long-term care insurance, and pension plans, all of which use the probability of mortality. Those who follow the CAS exam track will typically work for companies that develop premiums for risks that are more quantifiable, such as automobile and homeowners insurance.
BU MET offers the MS in Actuarial Science, the MS in Actuarial Science with concentration in Finance, and the MS in Actuarial Science with concentration in Insurance, as well as the Actuarial Foundations Graduate Certificate and the Actuarial Science Graduate Certificate.
