Campus Climate Lab Awards Funding to Trio of MET Students for Research Effort in Support of BU Climate Plan

Three Metropolitan College master’s degree candidates have come together to formulate a research project that will help Boston University facility managers make critical decisions about what measures to take in planning for climate change—and now they’ve secured funding for their efforts, courtesy of the BU Campus Climate Lab.

Kaumudi Dande, who is pursuing her MS in Applied Business Analytics, Yu Gao, an MS in Applied Data Analytics student, and Kunsinee Srivchaiin, an MS in Supply Chain Management candidate, will work with Associate Professor of the Practice John Maleyeff and Adjunct Professor David Weidman on the endeavor, which will leverage decision technology to design a decision support system that accounts for costs and the dynamic, shifting realities associated with climate change.

Inspired by Boston University’s Climate Action Plan, the research will examine the economic underpinnings of climate change preparation, particularly as it relates to risk management, building maintenance, and retrofitting. By building a color-coded tool that will visualize data, the students’ research will help simplify and streamline the complex considerations that accompany climate change risk mitigation.

Part of BU’s Institute for Global Sustainability, the Campus Climate Lab supports projects that serve as innovative climate solutions. This effort from Dande, Gao, and Srivchaiin will benefit the University in the years to come as Boston is likely confronted with rising heat, winds, and floods.
