MS, Supply Chain Management

What motivated you to earn your master’s degree at this point? Why did you choose to fulfill your goal at Metropolitan College?
My journey as a mechanical engineer has equipped me with the skills necessary for product design, manufacturing processes, quality control, and continuous improvement. However, as I delved deeper into the world of business, I realized the importance of understanding logistics, distribution, procurement, and other operational aspects that contribute to delivering a product efficiently to customers. At Boston University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree, I recognized the immense potential that additional education offered for personal growth and advancement.

Returning to Boston University for my MS in Supply Chain Management was an obvious choice, as it offered much more than academic excellence. The program also provided invaluable opportunities, including six sigma accreditations, a dynamic learning environment, dedicated and passionate faculty, access to decision labs, and the chance to engage with exceptional peers. This unique combination gave me an exciting and valuable opportunity to further nurture and promote my professional development.

What do you find most fascinating about the discipline of supply chain management? Do you have a particular focus within the broader field?
I think supply chain management is like a captivating symphony, where materials, information, and resources perform an intricate dance across global networks. It’s a world that thrives on orchestrating complex processes, overcoming logistical hurdles, and striking the perfect balance between customer satisfaction and cost effectiveness. What truly captivates me is the analytical side of supply chain management, where I can delve into the depths of data and harness cutting-edge technologies like AI. Imagine using AI to crack the code of complex optimization problems, elevating the accuracy of forecasts, and revolutionizing inventory management decisions. The potential for innovation and the thrill of pushing boundaries in this field truly excite me.

Congratulations on your high achievement in the Supply Chain Management program and your Award for Excellence in your studies! Looking back, what do you consider to be the main ingredients of your success?
The key ingredient of my success is my unwavering passion for the subject. That became the driving force that propelled me forward, even in the face of daunting obstacles. It fueled my dedication, motivating me to work tirelessly and never give up. It also nurtured a sense of curiosity that kept me hungry for knowledge, constantly seeking answers and keen to engage in thought-provoking discussions. I actively sought guidance from professors, eagerly participated in class debates, and recognized the significance of forging meaningful connections. This genuine interest and proactive approach shaped my journey, enabling me to grow both academically and personally.

How were you able to successfully balance your studies with your commitments outside the classroom?
I think engineering school served as the ultimate training ground for me, honing not only my technical skills but also how I manage my time. I firmly believe that time management is the key to unlocking peak performance. Maintaining discipline is no easy feat, but I’ve discovered that employing the technique of time blocking when crafting my schedule works wonders. Embracing productivity apps, I’ve curated a system that keeps me organized and on track.

I’ve learned that breaking down my work into focused intervals, punctuated by short breaks, is the secret sauce to avoiding feeling overwhelmed. Preparing in advance serves as my shield against the temptations of procrastination. Recognizing the importance of physical and mental well-being, I prioritize sleep and engage in regular exercise, knowing that they fuel my focus and productivity.

However, I also understand the delicate art of balancing commitments, which often demands flexibility and occasional adjustments to my schedule. By embracing this dance of adaptability, I have discovered how to maintain equilibrium and achieve success across all my endeavors.

Is there a particular course or project that enhanced your experience in the Supply Chain Management program? Please explain.
In my case, three particular courses stood out and really enhanced my experience. Operations Management: Business Process Fundamentals (MET AD 605) helped me understand how managing the processes and resources involved in the production and delivery of goods and services work together to achieve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. Quality Management (MET AD 734) provided me with essential principles to help identify and implement strategies to improve quality across the supply chain, reducing defects and enhancing customer satisfaction. And, of course, Global Supply Chains (MET AD 680) provided insight into the complexities of operating in a global marketplace and gave me the knowledge to design and manage effective international supply networks.

What’s next for you? If you are changing roles, moving on to a new career, or receiving any kind of promotion, we would love to hear about it. Would you say that your program helped prepare you for the next phase of your life/career/education?
Embarking on this program opened doors to incredible opportunities that truly enriched my educational journey. One such opportunity was the chance to collaborate in the school’s esteemed decision lab, where we delved into the fascinating realm of inventory management and worked tirelessly to develop cutting-edge assistive decision-making algorithms. It was a thrilling experience to research, analyze, and present our findings alongside a team of brilliant minds.

Additionally, I had the privilege of working as a supply chain analyst at Signify, where I was immersed in the real-world intricacies of supply chain operations. This hands-on role allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I acquired during my master’s program. It became evident to me that the BU MET program not only complemented my technical expertise in mechanical engineering but also equipped me with a holistic understanding of the end-to-end supply chain process. This newfound perspective empowered me to optimize operations and drive efficiency.

Continuing my professional journey at Signify, I am thrilled to take on the role of mechanical engineer-new product development. This position demands a deep comprehension of both mechanical engineering principles and supply chain management concepts. I am confident that my diverse skill set will make me a more versatile professional, capable of seamlessly bridging the gap between design and manufacturing within the overarching supply chain framework.

Thanks to my education, I now have a broader perspective on the entire supply chain process. As an engineer, I understand the profound impact that design and manufacturing decisions can have on the overall supply chain. Armed with this knowledge, I am eager to tackle new challenges, drive innovation, and contribute to the success of Signify and the field of mechanical engineering as a whole.

You were recognized by faculty and peers for your hard work and dedication to the Supply Chain Management program. What “words of advice” or encouragement have served as a guiding principle, or simply inspiration, for you? Any words of wisdom you would like to pass along to students starting in the program?
There is a quote from a movie that says, “Don’t chase success, chase excellence, and success will chase you.” That has been a guiding principle throughout my journey and hopefully can inspire others. By striving for excellence, success becomes a natural byproduct. This quote serves me as a constant reminder to push beyond comfort zones, embrace learning and growth, and nurture meaningful relationships. It reminds me to prioritize personal growth, continuous improvement, and an unwavering commitment to doing my best not only in academics but in all areas of life. Ultimately, it makes clear that true success is a journey, not an instant result, and can be achieved by consistently pursuing excellence.
