What attracted you to BU over other schools? In particular, why did you choose BU MET?
As an international student from a tropical climate, I found that Boston offered a different cultural experience for me in many ways. BU presented itself as a school that prides itself on diversity and that seeks to develop well-rounded, critical-thinking students. BU also prides itself in having students who are excited about learning each day, embracing the numerous resources available.

BU MET’s Master of Science in Enterprise Risk Management is, notably, one of the most distinguished risk management graduate programs in the country. The course requirements succinctly cover the areas and career goals I wish to pursue.

In terms of your overall educational experience, what stands out most about the MS in Enterprise Risk Management program at BU MET?
Two things stand out to me: the structure of the program and the passion of the professors. The approach to the coursework extends beyond the classroom. It allows students to not only analyze real-world business problems relative to the course area of study, but to collaborate and network with business professionals. The professors’ approach to teaching and the knowledge they share show that they are subject-matter experts in their field. Their experience and knowledge complement and enhance discussions, creating a relatable learning environment. Knowledge acquired will be easily transferable from the classroom to the world.

What do you find most fascinating about your area of study? Do you have a particular focus within the broader area of enterprise risk management?
One thing I love about enterprise risk management is the fact that it allows for creativity and innovation while making a positive impact in a business. Additionally, I love the fact that this knowledge area can be used across multiple industries, as all industries face risks and unexpected circumstances.

Is there a particular course or project that enhanced your experience in the MS in Enterprise Risk Management program?
Having to go through a simulation exercise in Disaster Management (MET AD 614) allowed for a lot more real-world thinking than I expected. I was grateful for the opportunity to be able to make decisions and instantly see how they would affect a company in the real world. The real-life simulation exercises allowed me to expand my thinking outside my comfort zone. I felt quite accomplished after my results.

What specific skills or competencies have you acquired so far during your studies at BU MET that will be immediately useful as you launch your career in the field of enterprise risk management?
I have enhanced my organizational and time-management skills, which have greatly benefited me while completing my semesters at BU. Being able to manage the course load, prioritize deliverables, and create a personal agenda allowed me to be successful thus far.

In what ways are faculty available to you as a resource? Is there a particular faculty member who has had a positive impact your experience at BU MET so far? Who and why?
I have found that the faculty at BU MET have always made themselves available to discuss or elaborate on lectures, and to provide assistance. To date, Mark Carroll, John Maleyeff, and Dave Weidman have been amazing faculty members and have had a positive impact on my experience. I am extremely grateful for their support and guidance relative to career decisions. They have taken the time to coach and encourage me to seek further global professional development and networking opportunities during, and beyond, my time at BU.

What is next in store for you?
I am passionate about this relatively new and developing area, and it is taking flight globally. Not only am I hoping to secure a job as a risk analyst, in order to utilize all the skills I have learned, but I also wish to continue attending workshops and seminars to keep abreast of best business practices and developments within the industry. Additionally, as I pursue my ultimate goal of becoming a chief risk officer, I hope to use my talent to encourage young women to pursue a degree within this developing body of knowledge.
