SPH Community Members #WearOrange.
School of Public Health faculty, staff, and alums gathered remotely on Zoom on June 5, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, to join the call to end gun violence in America. The “Wear Orange” movement was created to make it easier for people to show their support for common-sense solutions to gun violence.
“In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and the righteous protests and march, I’ve been awash with feelings of rage, grief, sadness and exhaustion,” said Craig Andrade, associate dean of practice and director of the Activist Lab. “I imagine many of you are holding similar feelings.” But, he said, he feels hope because he is part of “a community that stands up over and over and says that gun violence is a public health crisis.
“But today is different, isn’t it?” said Andrade. “Today, we also say racism and the use of guns to act on that racism is a public health crisis.”
