Macro Practice Minor
Clinical Practice majors may choose to minor in Macro Practice. Students from all BUSSW MSW programs (Charles River, Off-Campus, Hybrid and Online) may choose to pursue a Macro minor. View the Macro Practice Flyer for details.
Macro Minors must complete two of the following courses: MP 773, MP 781, or MP 783, and one macro practice project in your advanced-year field-placement.

Additional Information
1) Total Program Credits:
- Traditional Track Clinical= 65
- Traditional Track Macro= 65 (67 if optional CP 771 group course is taken)
- Advanced Standing Clinical or Macro= 43 (40 if passed research waiver exam)
2) Any student who wishes to do a specialization should refer to the specialization table which can be found below.
3) The Council on Social Work Education identifies Engagement in Diversity and Difference as a Core Competency for Social Work. As such, all incoming students must take HB 735, Racial Justice and Cultural Oppression the first semester of their first year or before they enter the field. For the small number of students that are not able to do this due to scheduling issues (full time macro and MPH dual degree students) you must register for “IS 600 A1 Prof Development Seminar – Racial Justice Module” and complete this 3 hour module online by the designated deadline.
4) All clinical students must take an advanced clinical practice course during at least one semester of the advanced placement.
5) Traditional Track Clinical students select 6 electives in which at least one is:
- Human Behavior Elective (HB)
- Welfare Policy Elective (WP)
- Clinical Practice Elective (CP)
6) It is highly recommended that at least one additional advanced practice elective be taken during the other semester(s) of the advanced placement. All macro students must take an advanced macro practice course during at least one semester of the advanced placement.
7) Traditional Track Macro students select 5 electives in which at least one is:
- Human Behavior Elective (HB)
- Welfare Policy Elective (WP)
- Macro Practice Elective (MP OR HB 750 OR WP713)
8) SSW General Electives are any advanced course in the Clinical Practice (CP) Human Behavior (HB), Welfare Policy (WP) or Macro Practice (MP) departments. Pre-requisite courses must be completed before taking an SSW General Elective. Pre-requisite courses (CP 759, CP 770/71/72, HB 720, WP 700 OR 701 and MP 759) do not fulfill the SSW General Electives.
9) Macro students interested in Group Work can take CP 771 CP w/Groups and graduate with 67 credits.
10) Ethics must be taken during or after ones advanced placement.
11) Traditional track students who pass the Research 1 Waiver Exam may waive the Research I (SR743) course requirement. Students must replace SR 743 with an elective in their program. Advanced Standing students who pass the Research 1 Waiver Exam do not need to replace SR 743 with an elective class; they can go right into Research 2 in semester 1 OR an (HB), (WP), (MP) elective in Semester I and then take one less elective during any term.

13) Any change from these program plans must be made in consultation with the Office of Student Services & Academic Planning (sswoss@bu.edu).
14) Graduating students must submit a Graduate Review Form. Please complete and sign the appropriate fillable PDF, download the completed form, and email the PDF smee@bu.edu. For Traditional Track students, use this form. For Advanced Standing Students, use this form.
