Boston Mayor Kim Janey 2021 Umoja Speaker
Umoja, BU’s black student union, held its annual Rite of Passage ceremony May 14 on the BU Beach. Guest speaker Boston Mayor Kim Janey told the group’s graduating seniors: “As you imagine what you can accomplish with your degree, reimagine changing the world. You will find in the City of Boston a willing partner for your dreams. We need you to help solve the greatest challenges that confront us. We need your energy; we need your expertise; and we need your leadership.” Janey became Boston’s first woman, and first Black, mayor in March after Martin Walsh was appointed US Secretary of Labor.
