A Step Inside the Classroom
A BU Wheelock student reflects on the journey to becoming a teacher
From the beginning, I have been captivated by BU Wheelock’s community and dedication to making a difference, evident in every facet of its curriculum. Throughout my freshman year, I delved into various career paths centered around education and found myself deeply intrigued by the world of teaching. It was in the classroom that I discovered my passion and innate curiosity for nurturing young minds.
Over the summer before my sophomore year, I eagerly seized the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of education by joining Generation Teach, a nonprofit organization committed to combating racial injustice and inequity in education. Inspired by their vision and mission to cultivate loving communities where students, teachers, and leaders can thrive, I wholeheartedly embraced my role as a co-teacher. Working closely with a dedicated team, I had the privilege of co-teaching 5th grade reading and art classes.
From igniting a passion for literature to unleashing creativity through artistic expression, I found immense fulfillment in guiding young minds towards growth and discovery.
Every day brought new challenges and triumphs as I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. Collaborating with fellow educators and engaging with students from diverse backgrounds, I witnessed the profound impact of fostering an inclusive and nurturing learning environment. From igniting a passion for literature to unleashing creativity through artistic expression, I found immense fulfillment in guiding young minds towards growth and discovery.
However, this journey was not without its challenges. Each day presented unique obstacles that demanded adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to learn. As a co-teacher, I quickly realized the importance of flexibility and the ability to pivot when faced with unexpected circumstances. Whether it was adapting lesson plans to accommodate varying learning styles or finding creative solutions to address individual student needs, every moment required me to think on my feet and embrace the dynamic nature of teaching.
As I transitioned into my sophomore year, my passion for education only deepened, fueled by the meaningful experiences I had gained over the summer. Eager to further immerse myself in the world of teaching, I sought out opportunities to engage with students and communities in new and impactful ways.
Joining Breakthrough Collaborative and Teach For America Ignite Fellowship as an 8th grade math teaching fellow provided me with invaluable opportunities to continue my journey as an educator. These experiences allowed me to bring my enthusiasm for teaching into the classroom, working directly with students to inspire a love for learning and empower them to reach their full potential.
Building on the lessons learned during my time with Generation Teach, I approached each day with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. I embraced the challenges and joys of teaching, drawing on my previous experiences to navigate the complexities of the classroom with confidence and compassion.
Throughout my sophomore year and beyond, I remained committed to continuous growth and learning. Every interaction with students, colleagues, and mentors offered new insights and perspectives, enriching my understanding of effective teaching practices and the diverse needs of learners. As I reflect on my journey thus far, I am grateful for the opportunities that have shaped me into the educator I am today. Each experience has contributed to my growth and development, fueling my passion for education and my dedication to making a difference in the lives of students and communities.
Moving forward, I am excited to continue exploring new avenues for learning and growth, always striving to expand my skills and deepen my impact as an educator. With each day presenting new opportunities for discovery and connection, I am eager to embrace the challenges and joys that lie ahead, knowing that every moment offers a chance to inspire, empower, and make a difference.
