The only response
to a child’s grave is
to lie down before it and play dead

 

Knot

After you've sewn it, bite the thread off my grave -
Please leave no loose seam of me to wave above
The bones unknitting, the flesh unweaving love.

Bill Knott, originally known as Saint Giraud, was born in Carson City, Michigan. He was for many years an associate professor at Emerson College in Boston. He first received recognition with The Naomi Poems published in 1968.
