Snacks (零食)

When we talk about Asian foods, we can't forget about the childhood snacks we had! As young children, whenever we went to the supermarket, we would always run to the snacks aisle filled with colorful goodies and sweet and savoury nibbles. These snacks were always delicious memories and delightful treats! Many of these snacks also originated from Asian countries such as Japan, China, Thailand and more.

Lychee Jelly (荔枝jelly)

Lychee jelly is a jiggly, sweet dessert made from the lychee fruit. It can be eaten as is or as a topping on other beverages, ice creams or cakes. They usually come in small plastic jelly cups in large containers and are a delicious small sweet treat along with others.

Put Chai Ko (砵仔糕)

Put Chai Ko (literally translates to round bowl cake) is a round steamed rice cake, usually on a stick topped off with red or green beans. The cake is made of rice flour, water and brown sugar, making a soft, chewy texture with a sweet, fragrant taste. There are other flavors as well, such as green tea or coconut.

Egg Puff Waffles (鷄蛋仔)

Egg puff waffles are sweet, golden waffle egg cakes in a unique honeycomb shape. They can be eaten in pieces by pulling off the soft round pieces and eating them one by one. In Chinese, they are called eggettes because it's almost literally like small pieces of egg cake. It tastes best when served warm right off the stove as the outside is crispy while the inside is fluffy.

WANT WANT (旺旺) Rice Crackers

Want want rice crackers are a childhood staple of many people. Appearing in many Asian supermarkets in HUGE packages during Lunar New Year, they were usually for gifts or celebrations. In addition, they were a common snack. The left image shows the savoury version of the rice cracker, with a salty, flavorful cracker while the right image shows the sweet version of the cracker, the same rice cracker in a different shape and with small sugar dots on it.

Shrimp Crackers (虾饼)

Shrimp crackers are crispy snacks made with dried prawn, then deep fried into a savoury chip or cracker. They can also be seen in different colors mainly white, pink and green, giving it a nice look to accompany other foods in other dishes. It is a light snack, with not much flavor, but a memorable taste.
