Boston University Metropolitan College Awarded CAHIIM Accreditation
Metropolitan College receives globally recognized accreditation for
Department of Computer Science health informatics programs.
Boston, Mass.—April 2017: The Health Informatics program at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The accreditation applies to the Health Informatics concentration of the Master of Science in Computer Information Systems, and provides assurance that the curriculum meets or exceeds the standards set by the CAHIIM Board of Directors. Metropolitan College is one of only nine institutions offering a CAHIIM-accredited master’s program in health informatics in the U.S.
Offered through Metropolitan College’s Department of Computer Science, the Computer Information Systems master’s concentration in Health Informatics prepares information technology and health care professionals for careers in development, implementation, and use of modern health care information systems. The program provides an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to health care IT, and teaches both the fundamental concepts and the cutting-edge IT technologies used in the design, implementation, and management of health care IT applications.
“We are very pleased to have earned CAHIIM accreditation for our graduate degree programs in health informatics,” says Metropolitan College Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Lou Chitkushev, who is director of the College’s health informatics and health sciences programs. “Boston University is a world-renowned institution, with top-quality programs, faculty, and students. Our health informatics curriculum is designed to present concepts in an academically rigorous manner while ensuring that graduates are prepared for the realities of today’s health IT professions. The CAHIIM accreditation underscores both the solid academic structure of our curriculum and the applied nature of our graduate health informatics program.”
Application for CAHIIM accreditation is voluntary, and requires a rigorous self-assessment—including an in-depth evaluation of program goals, objectives, and content; academic policies; administration; educational resources; and the general effectiveness of faculty, administration, advisory committees, and students. The self-assessment is followed by a site visit, during which the CAHIIM team meets with students, advisory committee members, and others associated with the program, and also evaluates classrooms, laboratories, library resources, and online technical applications.
For students and employers, CAHIIM accreditation demonstrates that a health informatics or health information management education program meets established academic standards required for professional career entry. Students who wish to sit for the AHIMA professional HIM Certification Exams must graduate from a CAHIIM-accredited program, such as the BU master’s in Computer Information Systems offered by MET, to be eligible.
“We strive to provide high quality on-campus and online education with an up-to-date curriculum for our students,” says Dr. Guanglan Zhang, assistant professor of computer science and health informatics faculty coordinator. “CAHIIM accreditation assures that our program meets the health care industry standards—and shows employers that our graduates are confident and well prepared to excel in the field.”
For over 35 years, Metropolitan College’s Department of Computer Science has been distinguished by full-time faculty who reflect the values, quality, and prestige demanded by a world-renowned institution such as Boston University. They have outstanding academic credentials, excellent teaching abilities, highly recognized publishing records, and the strength of their professional experience. Students in the programs come from over thirty countries, their diverse backgrounds and global perspectives enhancing the multicultural environment of classes on the Boston campus or online.
The online master’s in Computer Information Systems is ranked #4 among the nation’s Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs (U.S. News & World Report).
