Excavation Fellowships and Grants

361 ASOR Fellowships and Grants Awarded Since 2007

In 2007, ASOR renewed its emphasis on providing excavation grants and fellowships that allows individuals to participate in excavations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Since 2007, ASOR has awarded 361 total grants and scholarships for excavations through the Dever, Harris, MacAllister, Midkiff/ Strange, Eric and Carol Meyers, Meyers/Wright, Platt, Sheeler, and Heritage Fellowships.

List of Previous Recipients

  • Excavation Participant Scholarships ($2,000 each for 2017):

    • Heritage Fellowships: An ASOR fellow holds a small aerial photography helicopter.In addition to endowed scholarships, each year generous ASOR donors support Heritage scholarships for students and other worthy individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
    • P. E. MacAllister Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by the family and friends of P. E. MacAllister. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
    • Eric and Carol Meyers Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by the students and friends of Carol and Eric Meyers. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
    • Shirlee Meyers / G. Ernest Wright Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous endowment given by Profs. Eric and Carol Meyers. One-half of the funds awarded each year are in memory of Eric's mother, Shirlee Meyers. The other half of the funds each year are in memory of Prof. G. Ernest Wright, former ASOR president and a professor of both Eric and Carol Meyers. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
    • Platt Fellowships: These fellowshipswere made possible by a generous endowment given by the late Mrs. Katherine Barton Platt. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
    • Sheeler Fellowships: These fellowships are made possible by annual contributions from the Sheeler family in celebration of Harva Sheeler's involvement in and support of ASOR and archaeological digs. Fellowships are designated to support volunteers and staff on the Hesi Project. Application deadline: February 15, 2017.
    • Strange / Midkiff FamiliesAn ASOR fellow takes notes during a marine excavation. Fellowships: These fellowships were made possible by a generous lead gift from James (Jim) F. and Carolyn Strange that was matched by their family and friends. These funds support scholarships for individuals to participate in excavations. as well as from their family members and friends. Application deadline is February 15, 2017.
  • Excavation Grants to Support Excavation Projects

    • Harris Fellowship: This fellowship was made possible by a generous endowment given by the late Rev. Charles Harris. These funds support excavation work of ASOR-affiliated projects. There will be one award of $5,000 for the summer of 2017, and the application deadline is December 15, 2016.
  • Fellowships for Junior Scholars

    • William G. Dever Fellowship for Biblical Scholars: A two–month travel-study award of $7,000 will be made available in the summer of 2017 to a qualified American untenured faculty member in the field of biblical studies who wants to acquire elementary, first-hand experience in field archaeology and research in Israel. The application deadline is December 15, 2016 January 10, 2017
